Project summary: The Liverpool Aquafarm project aims to create an off-grip, functioning, pilot-scale fish farm on a disused Liverpool Dock. This will be a focus for advanced aquaculture R&D, education and local food production (fresh fish, seaweed and shellfish) in a disused urban space, delivering new projects, funding opportunities, PhDs, new jobs and distinctive commercial activity. We are looking for parties interested in developing and proving technologies and approaches in this working pilot plant. These may include sensor and telemetry, water treatment technologies, companies interested in Urban Farming and disruptive supply chain and companies dealing with renewable energy technologies.
Detailed summary: The Liverpool Aquafarm project was initiated at the IFB2016 and is supported by an ongoing collaboration between: Liverpool City Council, Peel Holdings, Curtins, Arup, WYG, the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University and Seaweed Alchemy. Liverpool Aquafarm demonstrator aims to create a technology test bed for aquaculture systems with the goal of creating a transportable, modular, off grid, pilot-scale aquaculture farm with an R&D facility (cultivation, therapeutic and water purification) and enterprise outputs. This delivers a focus for advanced aquaculture R&D, education and local food production (fresh fish, seaweed and shellfish) in a disused urban space, delivering new projects, funding opportunities, PhDs, new jobs and distinctive commercial activity. We aim to investigate, develop and demonstrate advanced sensor and control systems to provide monitoring, automation and, eventually, part autonomous operation of the aquafarm. The Aquafarm pilot will also become the focus for a dissemination and communication campaign and a visitor destination to promote innovation and impact, strengthen links to the wider Liverpool community and raise awareness of the sustainability agenda.
